MLT city council races offer voters real choices

Mountlake Terrace voters have an impressive slate of city council candidates on the Nov. 6 ballot.

All of the candidates are well qualified, leaving voters with real choices in all four contested races. We think the best selections are Lonnie Williams Sr., Jerry Smith, Luis Moscoso and Laura Sonmore.

In the race for position 1, Williams brings the benefit of council experience, seasoned good judgment and calm that are a sure plusses for any public body. His opponent, restaurant owner Angela Amundson, is perhaps uniquely knowledgeable about the community.

Position 2 is a race between two people long devoted to the community. Jerry Smith brings both energy and longtime community experience, especially in volunteering and as a business owner. Bob Lytle also has deep volunteer experience in the community, especially in youth sports and senior citizens groups.

For Position 4, Moscoso brings knowledgeable viewpoints about the community and public transit, as well as volunteer and labor union experience. His opponent, Douglas Wittinger, has a strong background in city affairs, serving on the city planning commission and previously on the board of adjustment.

Sonmore, an incumbent, brings the experience of a lifetime resident as well as her record of service as a member of a council that has functioned impressively well. She is challenged for Position 6 by former council member David J. Smith, who also has a strong understanding of city affairs.
