I was pleased beyond words to read the story in this newspaper a couple days ago that commuter train ridership has increased dramatically.
For years, now, I’ve been telling anyone who would listen that (1) the daily auto commute on the freeways is insane and would have to be ended somehow, (2) that the most efficient way to end it would be to make the trips on trains, and (3) that once people tried it, they’d like it.
One thing that sparks the change, of course, is the high price of gasoline, but that was going to happen anyway, because there’s only so much crude oil in the planet, and we’re approaching the point where there won’t be any more of it, at least at prices we can afford.
All the same, isn’t it nice that trains, which can run on renewable fuels, are so much fun to ride?
