Marysville is facing problems with overcrowding in their schools because of the rampant, willy-nilly construction of homes for so many years. People are not willing to raise their taxes any more because they can’t afford to stay in their homes if they do. I don’t question the need for more classroom space, but I do really question the needs of a district that has not acted responsibly toward it citizens.
A new high school – I don’t think so. Pilchuck High School was built to be an addition to Marysville High School. Let’s get rid of the configuration of a junior high that houses eighth and ninth grade students in a building that was built to be a high school in the first place. Put the ninth grade back into the high school and the eighth back in the middle school. This idea would save the taxpayers $58.3 million. What is this replacement of existing elementary? You have Cascade and Liberty scheduled to be replaced. Why not just make up-grades and improvements to the buildings. That’s $20 million saved right there.
Until our Legislature fixes the way property taxes are collected with the senior citizens having to pay, I will never vote for a school bond or levy. The state has a reduction based on your income, which would require a person or a couple at the poverty level to take advantage of. I don’t see any need for a person to pay any school taxes whatsoever when they are a senior citizen, regardless of their income!
