Police motorcycle patrols riding in formation is an accident waiting to happen. The incident involving the truck and trailer that drifted over the centerline should be a serious wake-up call. Riding that close together, at any speed, effectively reduces the reaction/avoidance time to zero.
When riding a motorcycle, common occurrences like a dog running out or a piece of 2-by-4 in the road or a vehicle drifting over the centerline are serious hazards that must be avoided – doing so when surrounded by other motorcycles will almost certainly result in disaster. The accident involving seven police officers riding motorcycles on Machias Road on Feb. 13 was totally predictable and avoidable; that no one was killed is a miracle. Riding in formation is dangerous and puts all road users at risk.
