Murray, Cantwell have wrong attitude

After reading the Jan. 24 article regarding the threats by our two illustrious senators about blocking President Bush’s nomination of Ronald Leighton to be a federal district judge, I think they both need to grow up.

President Bush won the election and with that goes the right to nominate whomever he wants to be judge. Nowhere did the article say that Ronald Leighton was not qualified to be a judge. I guess the president committed the unpardonable sin of not getting the blessings of our senators. I believe the term “advise and consent” applies here. However, Mr. Leighton deserves to be voted on by the whole Senate. Not just two.

This attitude of “If you don’t do what we want we’re taking our ball and going home” is really beneath the senators. I can just imagine the gnashing of teeth if the situation were reversed. Come to think about it, I seem to recall on several occasions the indignation from Sen. Murray when the Republicans did this to President Clinton. How soon we forget. Also, after hearing how enamored Sen. Cantwell was with Castro after her recent trip to Cuba, I might question her judgment. So, senators, let the nomination go to the floor of the whole Senate for a vote. If Mr. Leighton does not make it, at least he’ll have a fair hearing.
