It is good that when we go shopping, we don’t have to pay sales tax on our food. However, rich or poor, we all have to eat.
It is not so good that we have to pay state sales taxes on some other items. When we catch a cold, we feel just miserable, yet we have to pay a tax on the cold remedies that we choose to relieve our suffering. Some people are advised by their physicians to take an aspirin every day, but why do they have to be taxed on that? If I accidentally cut my finger, I have to pay a tax on a medicine for it and for a bandage. That is adding insult to injury!
For our good health we do need food, but we also need to keep ourselves and our homes clean. We have to pay taxes on soap, toothpaste and cleansers and on germ killers and disinfectants of any kind.
We can understand paying taxes on items that are luxuries, but why do we have to pay taxes on the necessities of good health?
Surely, the state government can economize a little and get along on so many other taxes. We all have to restrain on buying some things that we can do without. When I see al the traffic on the highways and all the cars in a parking lot, I think that all those drivers are paying state taxes. Then I wonder where all that money does go. Of course, the higher that prices are, the more tax money the government can collect. As property prices soar, our property taxes rise as fast.
