NASCAR or not, stores were coming

In response to the recent letter, “Anti-track group will regret all the traffic” (Saturday), the proposed site for the NASCAR track was not on the same property as the proposed Wal-Mart. It’s not a matter of the track or Wal-Mart.

Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon repeatedly asked area residents if they would prefer the track or big-box retail that would bring more daily traffic. When the track proposal was criticized for providing only 48 full-time jobs, track proponents, including Reardon, argued that ancillary development around the track would bring more jobs.

So the truth is the land surrounding the proposed track site was never going to remain empty. Development was going to be encouraged, including big-box retail and all the “daily traffic” it brings. Do you think that if NASCAR would have built the track, that Wal-Mart would not want to build next door?

Snohomish County expects to increase in population by 300,000 over the next 20 years. I hope that residents and communities continue to become increasingly involved in how North Snohomish County will look in 2025.

FILE — Supporters of President Donald Trump storm the U.S. Capitol in Washington, Jan. 6, 2021. The Supreme Court’s ruling that Trump enjoyed broad immunity from prosecution over official acts has opened the possibility that more evidence in his attempt to subvert the 2020 election could be revealed in public court filings — maybe even before the upcoming presidential election.
