Recently in The Herald, Snohomish County Representative Nate Nehring was celebrating the U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade and allowing for strict anti-abortion laws to be enacted across our country (“Roe v. Wade ruling spurs praise and outrage in Snohomish County,” The Herald, June 24).
Nehring suggested that abortion had created a culture of death in the U.S., and while you might have thought he was talking about the popularity of AR-15s as the go-to weapon for the annihilation of school children, unfortunately he was talking about the fundamental right for a woman to control her own body. I realize Nehring is young and I also used to be against the right to choose when I was a little kid and didn’t understand where babies came from, but Nate Nehring is an elected representative of the people and while does not have the power to affect the legality of abortion in our state at this time, he aims to do so.
We can no longer afford to vote for politicians who believe they know better than you what’s best for your body and your future. We cannot have politicians who believe that their moral judgment is superior to those they represent, especially boys like Nearing who will never know the sacrifices of carrying a child in the womb for nine months, yet still think the world will be a better place by taking the rights away from women who must do the heavy lifting for the rest of us.
