Congratulations to the Navy, whose PR staff evidently was able to score an absurdly pro-Navy Herald editorial about the amplified daily reveille broadcasts. “Never unwelcome,” these canned bugle blasts that blare into the surrounding neighborhoods every morning at 8, even on weekends?
What about the many shift workers and others who work nights, who are hoping to catch up on their sleep? What about mothers of small babies who’ve been up all night, or sick people, or college kids home for the weekend and hoping to sleep in? What about all the people who don’t appreciate the “You’re in the Navy now!” atmosphere that these intrusive broadcasts provide inside their own homes?
My understanding is that several months ago, the then-new base commander took the decision to increase the volume and direction of what should be an in-house event. That decision should be reversed. We live about two miles away, but we can hear those loudspeaker broadcasts over a headset or earplugs.
If the Navy really values tradition, let them return to a true tradition: the live bugler or trumpeter, actually playing reveille for the delectation of those on the Navy base. This would have the additional benefit of providing employment for musicians.
