For the past several weeks, I have read with great interest letters from people both for and against the NASCAR track being built at Smokey Point. I was totally flabbergasted by one letter in particular.
The writer claimed that they had lived in Florida, and therefore had some things to share on the subject of NASCAR (“NASCAR: It has little to offer area, but trouble,” Wednesday). After reading the letter, it became very obvious that this individual had never been to a NASCAR race, nor the two tracks that were mentioned. I would suggest spending the money and visiting those tracks before speaking again.
As a 20-year NASCAR fan, I have traveled all over this county, spending thousands of dollars to follow this sport. I have also been to both tracks mentioned numerous times. Never, ever, were any of the “negatives” that were mentioned in this individuals letter, seen by myself or anyone in our group. For this person to boldly make the statement that NASCAR fans are noisy, undesirable, criminal drunk drivers who litter in the surrounding neighborhoods is not only ridiculous, it is just not true. I am finding that the people who most oppose the track being built here are resorting to causing mass hysteria with tales of gloom and doom. I would also venture to guess that the majority has never been to a NASCAR race. I totally support having a wonderful family-geared organization such as NASCAR here in Snohomish County.
After it’s all said and done, I only have four words to say … Gentleman, start your engines!
