As we stand here on the west end of Casino Road analyzing the destruction done to our beautiful new wooden neighborhood signs, we wonder who could be driven to this type of malicious mischief.
There are many long-term renters, condominium owners and business owners here in this part of the city who care about our neighborhood. The Westmont Neighborhood is a new neighborhood association formed approximately three years ago. It was formerly the Walter E. Hall Neighborhood Association, which disbanded several years ago. With its new name and a small group of enthusiastic charter members, it proceeds forward to upgrade the neighborhood. We have had clean-ups, hosted a neighborhood event and have plans for much more.
We applied for a matching-funds grant from the city and received it. We had two beautiful wooden, double-sided signs made and had the streets department clean up and landscape the two islands on West Casino Road and place our new signs on those to identify the neighborhood parameters. Someone drove on the islands purposely, destroyed the signs, and drove through the city’s plantings, leaving large tire tracks.
We are hoping if someone witnessed these acts of violence, they’ll call the Everett Police Department. The first destruction was done the night of March 9 across from the Tesoro station at 5th and West Casino Road. The second was done the night of March 11 at Airport Road and West Casino Road.
Now our association will have to begin again, and we intend to. We believe these neighborhood groups greatly enhance and improve our city. We also believe that good destroys the bad and we will continue to make improvements and host community events. If anyone out there would like to contribute to the replacement of our signs, please call the city’s Office of Neighborhoods.
The Westmont Neighborhood Association meets the second Thursday of each month. The place and times are always telecast on our local Channel 21. These are good, informative meetings. We hope the residents of our neighborhood will attend.
