It has finally happened again. We have been saturated in the catch phrase of the year and I for one am getting sick and tired of hearing it. Can no one come up with anything more original when they are excited, surprised, overjoyed or any other emotion, than, “Oh my God?” I hear it every time someone opens their mouths on TV and radio. Drew Barrymore when she got her star on Hollywood Boulevard. Britney Spears when she … well when she opens her mouth to say anything. Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and thousands of other talented, rich and famous people in Hollywood. I used the term talented so loosely, I hope you all caught that.
It is so over-used, so over-written and quite frankly offensive to me, a Christian. He is my God, and he can very well be yours as well but to call that out as just an exclamation is in poor taste and disrespectful, to say the very least. What is wrong with plain old “Oh my!” or “Oh my gosh,” or here’s one, “Wow!” Anything but “Oh my God!” It is using the Lord’s name in vain and I know that the people I hear saying it are not using it in a respectful, spiritual context, it is just the new thing to say when there is nothing else to say.
But in reality, there is an entire dictionary of things to say. Try using your imagination and your intelligence and come up with something else. I am so sick of hearing it, and I know for a fact I am not the only one. I am, however, the only one who sees it is important enough and annoying enough to write to the newspaper about it. There are thousands of other creative imaginative things to say when you are surprised, excited, happy or sad. Please, give it a rest for “goodness sake.” See? There is another one right there and it only took me seconds to think of it.
