As a retired educator and mother, I recognize the many ways that a great library evens the playing field academically, economically and socially for we who benefit from its existence. While Snohomish, Monroe and Marysville all have libraries that provide much-needed services to all regardless of their means, Lake Stevens residents must do without.
A library is more than a place for books. It is a center of learning and dialogue that speaks volumes about who we are and what we value as a city. The benefits to our town far outweigh the cost. And, of course, by enriching our community, it will drive up property values, which offsets the investment, as well. Our kids, our seniors, our working folks deserve a library we can all be proud of.
When Lake Stevens voted to join the Sno-Isle Library system, it put us on track for a better library. Sadly, many of the services of the Sno-Isle program cannot be implemented in our tiny library.
Lake Stevens voters will have the opportunity to enhance our Sno-Isle alliance when we bring a new library to our community by voting yes twice on the Feb. 14 ballot. It’s about the future of our community and nothing less. Please vote yes and then, vote yes again.
