Like many of the residents who live in Snohomish County, my family is experiencing the negative effects of Boeing layoffs and the high rates of unemployment in our area, but this is not why I’m writing this letter. I have lived in this city all of my life and I believe that things will get better. But if we sacrifice the needs of our children, we are sacrificing the future of Washington state.
Please contact your senators and state representatives and let them know that they need to consider all options to generate new revenue to address the current Washington state budget emergency. Kids and families should not be forced to pay the price of the revenue crisis. I strongly support new, progressive taxes and revenue options to avoid making cuts to services that help vulnerable children and families. To be blunt, I would rather pay a little extra now for preventative services for children and families, rather than pay later for drug-alcohol rehabilitation and prison costs.
