Regarding the Sept. 17 letter titled “Is there motivation to end this strike?” The letter writer had a very good question which can be answered with a very simple, no – on both sides.
Comparing the Boeing Co. losing millions of dollars a day to a teachers’ strike is comparing apples and oranges. Boeing employees also lose millions of dollars a day during a strike. If they are able to work for the company long enough, they may see a return on those lost wages.
Teachers are guaranteed 180 days of work and it doesn’t matter if class starts in September or November. The Legislature needs to step up and reduce the number of days students attend class during strike years (not paying teachers for strike days) or require mandatory, binding arbitration. An illegal teachers’ strike doesn’t hurt anyone but parents and students.
