The June 20 editorial “Council should rethink its vote on United Way” touched a sore spot in me.
For more than 20 years, my company has wasted money on this on-the-clock begging. It’s not easy to watch many co-workers shuffle into a room to view a 10- to 15-minute video and a verbal discussion lasting another 15 or more minutes. I am insulted at the idea that a free cup or pin, etc., would be considered an enticement to donate.
United Way is a helpful organization. People who donate are able to do so without this interruption in productivity, not to mention the pamphlets now handed out to each employee.
Most of the organizations already send donation requests through the mail, and with the Internet there is no excuse to continue this wasteful tradition.
