I couldn’t agree more with the judge who says a bright orange jumpsuit is fine for a murder suspect. (Herald article, July 23, “Opel won’t get new clothes”). It identifies who she is. Four-hundred dollars for a wardrobe – now or later – for Barbara Opel is absurd. No skirt, blouse, dress, slacks, sweater, jacket or shoes will or can change how she is perceived. She made that choice in April 2000. That’s more money than she was offering some of the teenagers she convinced to help her with her hideous crime. Are her attorneys aware she already has a wardrobe that public funds provide? That, along with every other amenity she has? What did Jerry Heimann get?
I don’t agree Susan Lemery should have been allowed to wear street clothes either, but at least I hope they are what have been and will be hanging in her home closet for a very long time. To me, jail-issue orange, sandals, and heavy chains are very appropriate.
If the county has $400 it needs to spend, let me know; I’ll give them a list.
