I was horrified to read The Herald’s article regarding the alleged abuse of a newborn baby by its father. (Aug. 29, “Father was enraged by baby’s sobs, papers say.”) I was outraged, and still am. When I learned of this infant’s condition, I was numb. The extent of his injuries was unbelievable, but more importantly, unforgivable.
I can’t imagine the pain and terror that child has endured. What a sad way to be welcomed into this world. I find comfort in knowing this baby is safe and being well cared for while in the hospital.
The young girl who also had the responsibility of caring for this infant cannot be called a “mother.” None of her actions can be called motherly. What kind of person would not inquire about their baby’s condition and simply leave over the weekend to go to the fair? Her actions speak volumes. It broke my heart. This girl clearly does not possess the maturity required to nurture, let alone parent, a child. Not now, perhaps never.
To return this little one to that horrific environment would be unconscionable. More abuse, more pain, possibly death.
I don’t know this baby’s name, but I will never forget him — just seven weeks old.
