Joe Lieberman’s primary defeat sends a message: moderates as well as conservatives don’t belong in the Democratic Party. It looks like another triumph for the liberal wing of the party. That’s the same wing that got up on its high horse and alienated Southern Democrats and turned the party into a minority party which has steadily lost its grip on power.
Now the left wing of the party has moderates in its sights. Looks like they are set to work their magic again and alienate centrists from the party as well as conservatives. That will leave the left-wing all by its glorious self. That strategy won’t fly in winning national elections. Political parties, like airplanes, need two wings to fly. A party with only a left wing is dooming itself to permanent minority status. It seems odd that a political party which prides itself on supporting diversity wants no diversity within its ranks. Moderate Democrats, like the conservative Democrats before them, are not wanted in today’s Democratic Party.
