In regard to the Monday letter “Union should focus on worker benefits,” and the writer’s total lack of understanding of public service retirement packages: When I got hired as a firefighter I must have missed the part about being able to retire at 53 with free medical for life. What I do know is that any law enforcement or fire employee hired after 1981 can retire at the age of 53 as long as they have 20 years on the job but they do not get free medical.
The only way the vast majority of those on the job today will get their medical covered is if they can somehow get in a time machine and get hired 26 years ago or be fortunate enough to get part-time jobs at Kinko’s and Costco after they retire and split the benefits.
If I’m missing anything, please let me know because I’ll be very disappointed if I find out that I’ve been wasting my time by actually taking responsibility for planning my own retirement.
