Regarding the June 8 letter, “Cell ban another swipe at liberty.”
Thank God, someone who feels like me regarding the socialist laws being passed by this state’s socialist leaders. Thank you to the letter writer and Julie Muhlstein for assuring me I’m not the only one that feels as you regarding our liberties. It’s especially encouraging to know the letter writer is a police officer. Perhaps common sense still has a chance here. I appreciate his comments very much.
These nonsense laws also allow for an attitude to creep in of disrespect of law enforcement. For example, as a war veteran (Vietnam), I don’t need to be told to wear a seat belt by a police officer telling me I’m breaking the law! Get serious, I know what to do to protect myself, sorry if others don’t! And whether I do or don’t is not the officer’s business, and he has more serious things to be concerned with during his patrols.
Isn’t it interesting when the leaders that make these liberty-reducing laws are the same police officers that will enforce them – John Lovick and the seat belt law, for example. Further, I don’t recall them telling us before voting they would do the things they do that reduce individual liberties, “I’m going to Olympia to pass a law that makes using your cell phone a violation of the law and the fine will be $112 for doing so! Vote for me!”
Willingly giving away liberties through the Legislature is not a good idea even if the law they propose is a good idea. Good ideas don’t need laws to enforce them because of those that would do the enforcing. Respect is hard to earn but easy to lose. So are our liberties.
