In response to Marietta Alexander’s Friday letter, “No pyrotechnics means peaceful city,” I will have to say that I completely disagree. Ever since I was a kid, I have always looked forward to lighting sparklers and other fireworks to celebrate our Independence Day and our country’s freedom. Now that I am an adult, what I do not look forward to every year is people who complain about fireworks. Those are the citizens who flood the police department and dispatcher with petty firework complaint phone calls.
The Fourth of July happens one day out of the year. I understand that the fireworks can go on for weeks before and after this day, which I feel should be illegal, but I do not see the need for gloating about fireworks now being illegal on July Fourth. Does it make people happy to know that children now cannot enjoy a sparkler or two one day out of the year? I want to let anti-fireworks people know that I have officially nominated them as the Scrooges of Independence Day. I also have some advice for you: … Stop gloating and buy a case of ear plugs.
