Regarding the Aug. 4 letter, “Case made for complete overhaul“: I cannot understand why so many people are gnashing their teeth and pulling their hair out because Congress is … doing its job. The writer states, “unbelievable and unforgivable the selfishness and audacity of all of our elected officials in D.C.”
What exactly did members of Congress do other than exactly what we, the taxpayers, pay them to do? Did they not go into session to hash out an extremely difficult budget? Did they not reject one plan or another in order to more closely reflect the will of their constituents? Did they not come back to the table again and again until they found a plan they could all live with, thereby compromising to the point of agreement? Is that not what they are paid to do? I just don’t get why this writer is “embarrassed that the entire world sees this circus of doom and spiral of our economy right down the toilet? Really? I see Congress doing exactly what it is that we pay them to do and I’m proud to hold my head up and defend our system of government, even though no one ever gets exactly what they want.
