I don’t know where Kelly A. Parks went to school, but a disturbing number of these pro-monument letter writers don’t seem to understand that there are some things in this country that are not subject to a popularity contest (“Put it to a vote and live with results”). That’s why we have constitutions and supreme courts – they primarily exist to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority, and we might as well do away with them if we’re going to decide every issue by what 51 percent of the populace thinks.
And the problem isn’t just majoritarian religionists who think they have a right to propagandize on public property and currency. There are a number of other areas where the majority has long overstepped its bounds in this so-called free country, and some corrections need to be made, such as the puritanical prohibitions of prostitution and certain drugs. Hats off to people like Jesse Card who have the nerve to take an unpopular stand to advance the cause of justice.
