Froma Harrop’s Tuesday column, “Moderates still have a role to play in the U.S. Senate,” raises serious questions about the “big tent” of the Republican Party. I left the party when the neocons of “the Reagan revolution” seized control and let it be known that there would no longer be room for dissenting opinions.
Republican moderates have increasingly been the recipients of shabby treatment at the hands of the party’s ultraconservative wing. I respect people such as Arizona’s John McCain and Pennsylvania’s Arlen Specter. Both men are loyal to their party, but, upon election, they had the ethics to realize that they represent all of the people in their disricts, states and country and have tried to balance those interests.
Republicans’ poor treatment of their moderates demonstrates that there is no room for moderation in their ideologically narrow world view. This should serve as a warning to all as to where the Republicans are leading our nation.
