About 1,300 years ago, the emperor Justinian set about to reform the Roman legal system so the laws could be written down and standardized. Among the many laws, maxims and phrases, the one that sticks out in my mind is, “Bona Fide.” It means, “in good faith.” It also means, “honestly, openly, and sincerely; without deceit or fraud.”
The Marysville School Board, that is the “lame duck” school board, has acted without regard to the citizens of Marysville by extending a contract to Dr. Linda Whitehead through June of 2006. This is in spite of the editorials in The Herald and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the numerous letters and e-mails from parents and the people who showed up at the board meeting simply to ask for the decision to be acted upon by the newly elected board.
I feel that it is a slap in the face to the taxpayers and voters in Marysville, in spite of the overwhelming voice that was heard at the polls on election night. It is the kind of tactic one might expect from a banana republic, not the state of Washington in the 21st Century. To slip it in under the wire, the way it was done, lacked character. While the action of the board may be legal, it was not in “good faith.”
