As a lifelong liberal Democrat, I am of course pleased by the results of our recent election. However, I would like to send an admonishment to all the members of our next Congress, no matter their party affiliation or their political leanings: the voters have elected you because they are not happy with the direction our country has been going in the last several years. They have given you the opportunity to show what you are made of: Please don’t waste it!
There are so many important issues that need to be dealt with – war, poverty, the deficit, education, health care, international relations, the environment and many more. Please don’t waste all of your time on petty issues such as impeachment, indictments or other partisan bickering. Instead, I would urge all of you to reach across the aisle and work together in bipartisan cooperation for the betterment of our country and our world.
We may not get another chance. Now is the time to aspire to be statesmen, not merely politicians.
