In the past month there has been a substantial effort by the citizens of this state to let our legislators know that long-term health care is important to us. It seems the Senate has listened and in its budget proposal allowed for a 1.9 percent increase in funding for nursing homes. The House and our governor, however, don’t seem to want to listen.
If the governor and the House get their way we would see more nursing homes going bankrupt. In 2003, eight nursing homes closed their doors. Already this year, three more are looking to relocate their populations. This industry, which has been operating at an ever increasing deficit since 1999, could face a devastating $22.6 million loss. Our friends and family members who cannot take care of themselves need a place to live where their needs are met. Contact your representatives and the governor and tell them that long-term health care needs to be adequately funded. Please make your voice heard. The well being of your family, your friends, and perhaps some day yourself depends on it. ED MOORE
