President Obama says his objective in Afghanistan is to make sure that country will never again harbor terrorists who will use it as a base to attack Americans. This is preposterous: There is no way we could ever make sure of that, even if we occupied the country forever.
The Economist of London states flatly that we are losing in Afghanistan. The brave thing, the smart thing, for Mr. Obama to do now is to admit the cause is hopeless, stop the killing, and bring our troops home. And spend the money being squandered there on putting people back to work, here at home.
The Afghan war is a fool’s errand, which does not make Americans safer. Let’s admit our mistake, and close it down.
