A Tuesday letter reminded us not to forget Dr. King’s religious beliefs when we remember his fight for peace and justice. While it is appropriate to make note of Dr. King’s faith, I would also like to comment on Barack Obama’s speech at the Ebenezer Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Day.
In listing the many different beliefs held by the citizens of this country, it was gratifying to note that he included atheists along with Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and everyone else out there. Our forefathers set this country up as a secular state, and regardless of a person’s choice with respect to a spiritual life, what is important is that we all work together to create a country that cares for all of its citizens. Barack’s call for unity, and recognizing atheists as a component of the faith spectrum, are two good reasons he will be my choice in the upcoming caucus.
