Regarding the July 16 Herald article titled “In memory of DUI victims”: It is stated that Bud Wessman started the memorial sign project in 1994. This is not entirely true.
As a memorial for my two daughters, Kami and Nichole Moran, killed in an accident with a driver who had been drinking on Feb. 14, 1990, I went to Bud requesting that the first sign be placed on county roads. He told me that this was not a project he wished to support because this was a state project, not a county project.
After four months of gathering letters of support from local businesses, fire departments, schools, the sheriff’s office and politicians, I went straight to Bob Drewel, county executive. By this time, Mr. Drewel had heard of my fight and he authorized the first DUI Memorial road sign to be placed on Feb. 14, 1995, marking the fifth anniversary of my girls’ death.
Since this time, new signs have been placed in memory of many, many DUI victims. This part, I am sure, is because of Bud Wessman and his efforts. I hope this sets the record straight.
