In response to the recent article, “Everett to re-examine plan to build new events center,” I would like to offer the following:
The time is right for the entire city to respond to this plan. No. 1, the economic picture in the area is poor, to say the least. Second, some of the figures that have been presented for the project are equally suspect. To venture that the project would stimulate the economy could be partially correct, but not entirely. Our president has already warned us that great sacrifices are to be expected. Will this include increased taxes, cuts in benefits, less help for the poor, the elderly and the infirm?
If so, this would appear to be a very poor time to take on additional debts. Again, the proposed customer base of the “pro-hockey” team is said to be 7,000 a game? Believe me, in this area we will see many nights when they do not draw 3,000 customers. Traditionally Snohomish County has been an area where the people are doers, not watchers.
I would suggest to the mayor and the pro-concept city council members that now is the time to bow gracefully out of this debacle, rather than saddle generations in the future with your ill-thought wishes.
