I was very disappointed to learn that the Everett City Council has allowed council member Mark Olson to take a paid leave of absence while he deals with personal and legal problems stemming from his violation of his deferred prosecution on a previous DUI charge as well as recent allegations of sexual assault.
I know of no other employees of our city who would be granted a continuation of salary and benefits while they dealt with problems caused by their own behavior. If Olson had a medical condition that prevented his fulfilling his responsibilities, then the council would be doing the right thing. I could even understand if he needed a leave for alcohol or drug rehab, but this is not the case. He simply wants to continue receiving taxpayer funds because the mess he’s gotten himself into prevents him doing the job for which he’s being paid.
Shame on the “old boy network” attitude of the City Council, with the notable exception of Ron Gipson, who voted against this misuse of our money. The Herald editorial board is right, Olson has lost the confidence of the public and won’t get it back. Instead of continuing to take money from that public, he should be giving them something – his resignation.
