I have been following the escalating situation in the Middle East the past several weeks, and have grown rather dejected in the amount of distrust Americans are exhibiting towards our leader. It would appear that a conflict with Iraq is imminent. The question is merely a matter of when.
One of the great things about America is the right to free speech, which includes the right to protest when desired. Watching television these past couple of weeks, I, along with most other Americans, have seen my fair share of war opposition. If and when President Bush attacks Iraq, however, will these protests continue? During the Vietnam era, anti-war activists showed their opposition throughout the conflict. Having an opinion is part of being an American, and backing that opinion is what makes our country so prominent.
When President Bush makes his decision, whether it be to attack or stand down, support him. Show your patriotism by backing your leader. He was elected to make decisions for the people of America, and would not make an irrational decision. If anti-war protests continue throughout the Iraqi campaign, the effort will be in vain. The only way this project is going to succeed is if President Bush has the respect, support and confidence of the American people.
I urge everyone to be an American: support your commander-in-chief. If public opposition continues after the decision has been made, then America has already been defeated.
