I was dismayed to find that some judges think that consumers should have no control over the services we pay for. We pay for Internet service, yet others should be allowed to “spam” us for free. We pay for telephone service, but telemarketers should have free access to us. According to the courts, we should not be able to restrict unwanted phone calls using the service we’ve bought. What’s wrong with this picture?
Several years ago, an employee of the telephone company gave me a memorable piece of information. While it is illegal to place obscene phone calls, it is not illegal to use obscene language when someone else has called you. If you receive an unwanted telemarketing call, you may use whatever language you wish to tell the caller what you want him or her to do with the product. Be as descriptive as you want. You will be exercising your constitutional right to freedom of speech. You’ll also get removed from a lot of marketing lists.
