I am writing this in response to recent letters requesting a more national focus in The Herald.
I heartily disagree with the letter writers. There are dozens of national news information sources from which you can get your national news. CNN. NBC. CBS. ABC. FOX. AP. UPI. Bloomberg. USA Today. ESPN, just to name a few.
What is difficult to get is good information on local government, local color and local issues. How many “national” papers would provide us info on the Snohomish County ferry system terminal development plans or the drama and ethical issues involved in the Everett School Board censure of Jessica Olson? How many national news sources would provide information about the impacts and issues and forces behind and around the ill-conceived Point Wells development or John Gahagan’s journey through sorrow into action for help to families dealing with drug addiction?
None. That’s how many. The Herald is an invaluable source for local and state issues. Leaving the national stories to the national news organizations is the right choice. Only when there is a disproportionate local effect or a local connection should the scarce resources that The Herald has be spent on the national story. The Herald does such a good job of it that I have taken to linking The Herald website stories to national and international audiences on message boards I frequent.
I heartily endorse and appreciate the direction The Herald has taken and look forward to many more years of subscriptions filled with local news.
