Regarding the letter, “Stimulus efforts are effective.” I would greatly appreciate an explanation of the writer’s contention that adding more public sector jobs will stimulate the economy, if by “public sector” he means jobs paid for with government tax dollars.
As I understand the situation, it’s government overspending of available tax dollars that has led to the massive deficits at the local, state and federal levels. Unless these government entities are wrong in their own numbers, wages and benefits account for the majority of their operational costs.
We ought to always keep in mind that “government” can’t give anyone anything, especially its own employees, that it hasn’t taken from the “private sector” first. If we follow the writer’s reasoning, the current economic problems could be readily and quickly solved if the government operated all the businesses, controlled all the production, and was essentially the sole employer of all workers. I seem to recall that Utopian system was tried another by a world power, and came unraveled around 1989.
