Regarding Wednesday’s article, “State makes cut to disability lifeline”: Indeed, times are tough — and while cuts invariably need to be made, might we also look at trimming the fat and/or putting some safeguards on already existing programs? I work for a local retailer and on a continual and constant basis see the abuse to the food stamp program, i.e., do energy drinks really need to be subsidized along with pop and candy and other non-essential foods?
And, when will we stop rewarding those with yet more monthly benefits for each and every child “they choose” to bring into the world? How is it that seemingly able-bodied young adults can’t get any sort of paying job (yes, that just might be McDonald’s) yet are able to get state-funded provisions?
The topper? When a person can purchase (with their state issued/funded EBT card), over $100 in alcohol while also withdrawing $100 in cash — all on us, you, me, the taxpayers, while a deserving disabled person may and likely will lose their measly $266 monthly stipend? Indeed!
