The voters of Snohomish County would do well to cast their ballots for the re-election of Washington Supreme Court Justice Susan Owens in next month’s election.
A native of North Carolina, Susan Owens graduated from Duke University and the University of North Carolina Law School. She moved to Washington and, believing her children would be best served by growing up in a rural community, settled in Clallam County. As her children progressed through Clallam County public schools, Susan Owens first practiced law on the Olympic Peninsula, then became a member of the judiciary. Ultimately, she served 19 years as a Clallam County trial court judge.
After both of her children graduated from high school, Susan Owens successfully sought election to the Washington Supreme Court, where she has served with distinction for the past 6 years.
As the only Supreme Court justice who is not a product of the Seattle-Tacoma-Olympia “I-5 Corridor” political-legal community, Justice Owens brings a valuable perspective to the court. This perspective, coupled with her 25 years of judicial experience, make her a valuable member of the court.
But, to me, there’s more than that to admire about Justice Owens. Against great odds, Justice Owens was able to honor her obligation to her children, as she saw it, and raise them in a rural community, while still finding a way to achieve great professional success. She refused to choose between her profession and her children and has done honor to both. She is a great role model to parents everywhere.
We will all benefit from her re-election.
