I was pleased to read the Associated Press article in the Sept. 9 Herald entitled, “Capitol relic found but return in doubt.” After a long search, the top of the original capitol dome has been found and is in the good hands of a caring person, Mrs. Mary Stokes of Kenmore.
I wanted to add a clarification to the newspaper article that may not have been clear. If Mrs. Stokes decides she wants to keep the finial, it is my hope that she will continue to take good care of it, as she has done these many years. Although I, and many others would like to see it returned to the capitol, I recognize she is the rightful owner. There is not an attempt on my part to force this item back. If she decides the capitol grounds would be a fitting place for it or her home on the Sammamish Slough, is up to her and I respect her decision.
I thank Mrs. Stokes for her care of this historic item and ask her to keep us in her thoughts as she contemplates its future.
