With the new school year under way, many young students are looking forward to learning to drive. I think it is time to look closer at that program and make some drastic changes.
We have had “drivers training” (if you can call it that) in our school program for the last 25, 30 or so years, and look at what it has produced: thousands upon thousands of inconsiderate, egomaniacs barreling down the road, not caring who they cut off, run over, tailgate, and intimidate, as long as they don’t have to take a big club foot off the gas pedal.
If one of them cuts you off and you have to slam on your brakes to keep from hitting them and you honk your horn, you literally put you life at risk of an idiot then flipping you off, maybe even trying to run you off the road in a fit of road rage, and possibly even shooting at you. Now remember, these dear folks are products of our safe-drivers education programs in our schools. Maybe it is time to discontinue it.
Let the parents of these kids teach them to drive so that the first time they flip someone off or cut someone off, dear old dad can slap them alongside the head and remind them that they don’t own the entire road and they better not do those things. Dear old dad can also see just how they do drive and hold the keys until they learn how to act civilly when they are behind the wheel.
