I was a single, working mother of school-aged children for 10 years. Snow days were never an issue for us, as I anticipated them and arranged back-up care for my children for these and other events that might interfere with my ability to go to work and support my children.
We entrust our kids to the care of the school district every day, which would lead one to think we would defer, and gratefully, to their decision about school safety. These people have their students’ well-being at the forefront — not whether or not it is an inconvenience to you to have them at home, or find another place to put them.
School is not day care. If you’re worried about getting to work, why don’t you anticipate the snow days and make arrangements ahead of time? Surely that would allow the schools to focus more on our kids’ education than on your work schedule.
