Recently, I attended a presentation by the Snohomish County Children’s Commission on violent video games. Days later, I am still astonished by the clips shown from several of these mature rated “M” games intended for individuals 17 and older. The ludicrous and senseless violence incorporated into these games is beyond anything conceivable.
I felt compelled to let unsuspecting parents and caregivers in our community know about the type of violence our children, of any age, are exposed to while playing or viewing these games. The simulated murder of police officers, women, minorities and innocent bystanders are carried out by the game player. Victims are graphically depicted being shot, beaten to death with a shovel, decapitated, burned alive and urinated on, all with the press of a button.
Parents and caregivers, please take the time to know what video games your children of any age are playing and viewing inside and outside of your home. It’s time to say no to this completely absurd violence. For more information and a list of “M” rated video games to avoid, go to www.mavia.org.
