Lake Stevens is the only major community in Snohomish County that does not have a youth center, a skate board park or a park system that provides the needs of our youth.
Forty years ago the community of Lake Stevens built, with volunteer labor and material donations, the Lake Stevens Youth and Community Center. In 1960 we were well aware of the fact that our community needed a place our youth could call their own. We were unable to find a financial vehicle that would support our youth center. So, we were forced to turn our youth center into a bingo hall and a meeting place for local organizations. Today, the center is only utilized 10 percent of the time.
The Mitchell Community Center is maintained and operated by Lake Stevens Clubs Inc. Article II of the Clubs Inc. bylaws states: The object of Clubs, Inc. shall be to promote the interest of the community known as Lake Stevens and to provide a common place for its activities. Today, Club Inc. has two members; the Lake Stevens Lions Club and the Lake Stevens Junior Athletic Association. We believe the formation of the Park and Recreation Service Area fulfills the objective of Clubs, Inc. Therefore, Clubs Inc. endorses the proposed park system.
The creation of a Parks and Recreation Service Area is an investment in tomorrow, the children of our community. This may be our last chance to bring Lake Stevens into the 21st Century. It’s later than you think. The park system is endorsed by the Lake Stevens Lions Club, Lake Stevens C hamber of Commerce, the Lake Stevens Rotary Club, and Kiwanas and the American Legion.
If you love your kids and your community, you will vote for the formation and the funding of the Lake Stevens Park and Recreation System.
Let’s provide our children a place they can call their own. It’s the right thing to do.
