Recently, with a number of other Community Transit employees, I participated in a United Way Day of Caring project at the Adopt-A-Stream facilities in Snohomish County. We worked with a bunch of high school aged kids from the Center for Career Alternatives. These kids had stopped attending traditional high schools for a variety of reasons. They nonetheless have hopes and dreams like anyone.
One of them, a young man, is working on an associate’s degree in nutrition at Everett Community College and hopes to later attend and graduate from the University of Washington. At the end of the day, he made a point of learning my name and reminding me of his so we could both remember our day of labor in North Creek.
As always happens when volunteering, I ended up receiving far more than I gave that day. I received the gift of hope from this young man and his classmates, hope for our future. These kids didn’t have to do this project; they chose to give something back to the community.
This year’s United Way drive runs through Oct. 31. I strongly encourage everyone to support the United Way of Snohomish County in any way you can.
