I respectfully disagree with Jake Bottero (Letters, Sept 23, “Cops as roadworkers: An innovative way to address problems”). I strongly believe that the troopers need to be in their cruisers patrolling the roadways, not in costume or hidden in the bushes around the curve of the road. It is through their presence that they can control the flow of traffic; help to eliminate aggressive, reckless driving and to assist disabled motorists.
Would it not be in the public’s interest to have these patrol cars moving along the road and not be surprising you when you come through a blind curve and see a trooper using a radar gun? When this is the situation the majority of drivers immediately apply their brakes and check their speed, simultaneously checking the rear view mirror to see if the person behind you (who is probably tailgating) is slowing down or locking up their brakes so they won’t hit you. Is this not the recipe for a start of an accident?
Let’s make the roads safer through the presence of patrolling state troopers rather than enhancing the coffers of Olympia through the use of radar.
