Regarding the Tuesday letter about the flu, “Directives need to be taken seriously”:
I feel compelled to defend one of my favorite columnists. Julie Muhlstein writes so well of everyday situations that confront us. Sometimes it’s done in humor, but the recent column spoke to the truth of how difficult it is to follow the rules and stay home when sick.
I believe the fault lies with our workforce system. Compared to Europe, our benefits are very sparse and often do not offer many sick days. Sometimes a sick day will be deducted from vacation time, which, as Julie mentioned, is very much needed. Even companies involved in health care are guilty of “punishing” an employee, if God forbid their illness should fall on a Friday or Monday!
The yearly evaluation will have your absence duly noted!
I feel Julie was not suggesting anyone defy the public health directive, just showing how impractical or difficult it is for many to follow.
