People have right to show their pride

In response to Patton Wilson’s Sept. 7 letter, “Pledge of Allegiance: He’s sick and tired of empty patriotism”: He claims he’s sick and tired of millions of good Americans waving flags, singing “God Bless America” and quoting the Pledge of Allegiance. He thinks this is empty patriotism. I wonder what makes him such a good judge of character. His mere 17 years of experience?

This kid thinks what makes a great country is constitutional rights to not participate in those things that he doesn’t like. Right. But as a true died-in-the-wool-liberal he wants to take away those same rights that the majority of us want, so it doesn’t make him feel bad. What he doesn’t understand is, that in many countries if he had not stood for the flag salute, he would have been imprisoned or just shot! There are literally millions of good people in this country that have given their time, pain and even their lives for the likes of this ungrateful kid. Many people have immigrated to this country because it is the greatest nation on this earth. They love their nation as well as their flag. What he needs to do is get a little bit of education by seeing how people in third world nations live.

Some day his eyes may be opened and he will love the sight of that flag and be glad for the privilege of saying the Pledge of Allegiance!
