Julie Muhlstein’s column is a favorite. Her article on the Red Hat Society and the response she received prompted these comments.
Those of us in the Red Hat Society do not see ourselves as elderly. Elderly is a state of mind. It feels more like the Red Hatters are moving to younger and new ways of viewing the world. The younger generation needs to lighten up and start laughing at themselves.
As a group, we are there for each other in times of happiness, fun and adventure, but also in time of stress, family loss and when we need that extra pat on the back that keeps us going. In the words of a person who died the day before her 82nd birthday, “Smile in the face of adversity, for it will fool everyone.” Keep smiling and keep laughing at yourselves, for laughter can lead to adventure and fun!
We have raised children, are still guiding them through their lives, a lifetime profession. We have followed the rules throughout our lives and this “silliness” is a way of saying, “Let’s have fun, life is for living!”
Next time you go somewhere and see the “Red Hatters” enjoying life, let them know you appreciate their endeavors.
Laugh and the world laughs with you. Whine and the world just might turn its back on you.
