Regarding Sunday’s Herald article, “Angry reaction to loss of leases:” The woman who is threatening to burn down her house and pull up every plant has every right to do so, although, depending on condition it might make more sense to move her home to another property.
When I was selling real estate I showed several leased properties to prospective buyers and always warned them that a lease was temporary, not a permanent commitment. The tribal leases were very attractive. Many had long terms and very low yearly lease payments with no provisions for cost of living increases. There were waterfront properties leasing for $100 a month. Several years ago the Bureau of Indian Affairs raised the cost of leasing its properties, but tribal leases remained at bargain basement prices. Somebody should have realized this just couldn’t last.
